About

Cheltenham Improjam is a monthly get together of anyone who wants to turn up and watch or try improvised comedy. It usually the first Sunday of the month, 7pm-9pm at the Cheltenham Playhouse Green Room.

It’s FREE to attend, we do ask though that you please;

  1.  Buy a drink or two from the bar, it supports the venue – and (in the case of alcohol) makes the evening seem funnier 🙂
  2. Respect the spirit of the event – it’s an open show so anyone can turn up and have a go – meaning there are usually a lot of beginners there. Please be supportive and friendly, both if you are on-stage or in the audience.

We describe it as a sort of ‘Karaoke of Improv’ – random people will get up and have a go at random games with random partners. Some will be good, some will be ‘less good’, but all will be a bit of fun!

Please check the Cheltenham Improjam Facebook page for any last-minute changes

Rules

Cheltenham Improjam is the only improjam we know of that actually awards some jam to the winner (who is subsequently known as the ‘Jampion’). The rules are as follows:

General:

  1. Rule 1 – THERE ARE NO RULES!! – apart from the ones listed below, and whatever the host decides on the evening
  2. The host must remember to buy jam – if the host forgets to buy the jam, there may be no jam (unless they nip to Sainsburys at the interval)
  3. Buy a drink – please support the bar, and support the venue – ’tis a nice thing to do.
  4. Arrive on time – for Performers please get to the Playhouse Green Room just before 7pm, so the host can complete the arduous and complex registration process (they write your name on a bit of card, and at the end they have a ‘Deck-Of-Names’)
  5. Enjoy and support – remember this is an open night of improv and there are often new folks. We cannot guarantee every game will be a massive laugh, but we like to guarantee a nice and supportive atmosphere. So please be support the spirit of the event!

Format of the Show:

  1. Pick a Game – A random game is picked from the ‘Deck-of-Games’, and declared by the host to the crowd who wait hushed in anticipation
  2. Pick the Players – The players are selected at random from the names written on the Deck-Of-Names. Plus occasionally an random audience member pipes up they could do better – so the host may just add them instead.
  3. Explain Game – The host explains the game to the audience and the players. Then an argument takes place as to which local rules/variants we are using or something else like that.
  4. Play the Game – The game starts and is played. People tend to laugh at appropriate moments. If anything was particularly good anyone can shout ‘Jam!’ in appreciation of the sheer brilliance of what they witnessed
  5. Award Jam-Points – Once the game has ended the host awards ‘Jam Points’ onto the name card of the relevant performer(s) who caused the shouts of ‘Jam!’ These points will increase their chances of winning the Jam at the end of the evening.

 Awarding the Jam

At the end of the second half, about 9pm, the Grand-Draw will take place. This happens as follows:

  1. Gather Name Cards – All the name cards are gathered and shuffled. This will be those of all the registered performers and any audience members who have gained a Jam-Point at some stage for some reason.
  2. Eliminate Cards – Cards are selected at random. If they have any Jam-Points on the card, one point is removed and it is returned to the deck. If the card has no Jam-Points then that card is removed and given to the owner as a low-budget souvenir for the evening. This stage keeps happening until there is one card left and they are the winner.
  3. Award Jam – The ‘Improjam’ is handed over to the winner in a ceremony that would make an anti-climax look good
  4. Go Home – People work out where they came from and wander back there to continue with their life, possibly after having a few drinks in the bar.

Local Improv

If you are interested in Improvisational Comedy in Cheltenham there are the following groups and opportunities:

Comic Sans Script (CSS):

  • ‘Beginners’ for those who want to take up improv from scratch
  • ‘Core’ for those who’ve done the Beginner’s course or who have previous improv experience
  • ‘Advanced’ for those who are even more experienced

They are open to new members last time I checked so feel free to have a look here.
